How did Emgoddess start?
1996 I lived in the UK in London, studying aromatherapy at Tisserand’s. One day in a women’s health class the lecturer said a passing comment like “If you really understand your cycle, your whole life changes” and recommended a couple of books she liked around the subject (including Buffalo Woman Comes Singing and Red Moon).
That afternoon after class I stubbled across a New Age book store in the back streets of London and there were 2 of the books she mentioned. Like a sign from the universe, I bought them and began to read them straight away.
I was mesmerised! WHY are we not taught this information? Yes, I did like myself better at different times of the month and other times I had such self-loathing. I created my own chart and started to do my own form of charting.
My life changed. I had more understanding, more compassion, more self-esteem. This information made me feel so good about myself. So upon returning to Australia I started to enrol all my friends and work colleagues to join me to chart. Friends charted, work colleagues charted, and my clients in my aromatherapy clinic charted. More than 600 charts in a short time really concreted what I believed.
II saw a need and so in 1997 I started to do small workshops, and I sat down and wrote my first book. Although I could see the significance of the information, in 1997-98 there was still a LOT of stigma and shame around menstrual cycles, and when combined with my lack of confidence that still prevailed from time to time, I ended up popping it in a cupboard for years. But I continued my work. I worked with small groups, and one on one to help women to embrace their cycle and use it to benefit their lives.
Then in 2015 friends encouraged me to re-look at the book and “get it out there” and so Emgoddess was born.
So, now almost 25 years later and still very passionate about this work, I encourage you to find your own journey with your menstrual cycle and benefit as I have.
